Anyone who has ever read anything I post on Twitter knows that I'm obsessed with the zip code I live in here in Austin, 78704. That's why I was so excited to see that I don't even have to leave South Austin to see Ohio bad-asses Heartless Bastards. They'll be returning to town, playing the legendary, Continental Club. Sure, it's kind of a dad-bar but it's a great dad-bar and I don't have to cross any bridges to get there. Also, I don't have to go anywhere near 6th street AND I can get some Zen sushi. Although, Heartless Bastards don't go on until 12:30a so the whole sushi plan might have to be modified or nixed altogether but you get the idea. I'm not, entirely, sure what the cover charge is going to be but I'm going to guess $10. Also, I don't recommend showing up a few minutes before the set and expecting to get in. The room is not small but it's not too big either and it's popular on any Thursday night so plan to arrive early if you expect to actually get in.

If for some reason you're not already familiar with Heartless Bastards I recommend hitting-up the WOXY archives and downloading their session from 2006. For that matter explore and download the WOXY loung acts archives in general. Who knows how much longer parent-company Future Sounds can afford to maintain servers and webspace. The world still misses you WOXY! Way to fuck that up Future Sounds!

If you get to the Continental Club by 10p tonight (which I would suggest) you can catch local troubadour, Frank Smith bringing his brand of bluesy Americana music to the stage. His latest LP is called Nineteen and is available here for $10. Chances are you can also pick it up at tonight's show as well.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin at LZR
Sometimes I prefer to just see the opening band(s) and I leave during the headlining set. For instance way back in the early to mid-aughts I had the chance to see The Walkmen open up for...wait for it...Cake. After 2.33 Cake tunes I turned to my friend and said, "Let's go get a case of beer." to which he responded, "Thank you." I have similar feelings about Wednesday's show at La Zona Rosa. I'm not going to talk smack about Tokyo Police Club, I recognize that they have talent and that people truly enjoy their music, but I am not one of those people. However, I do enjoy the musical-stylings of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Not only is their name clever but so is their songwriting. Their latest LP Let It Sway features production from Chris Walla, of Death Cab for Cutie and has some of their greatest songwriting to date. If you're interested in checking this show out I'd get tickets now, while they're $16 because day of they show they will be, at least, $18.

In other, opening bands I'd rather see than the headliner news, playing the slot before SSLYBY is one of my favorite local bands, TV Torso. For that one person reading this who doesn't know, the vestiges of former Austin greats The Sound Team, are now mostly split between Sunset (Who play the Mohawk's inside stage Tuesday night) and TV Torso. I think Sunset represents the more weird/experimental side of the indie-coin whereas TV Torso represent the more pop-songcrafty side of the indie coin. I love both bands equally just like my children (who don't exist) but for different reasons.

So, make sure you get to La Zona early enough to catch BOTH TV Torso and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and then feel free to leave after a song or two from Tokyo Police Club, I won't judge you. Oh, and if you're interested in that Sunset show happening Tuesday there is more info about it here.
